Every girl deserves a space she can call her own, and that's just what our clients wanted to give their daughter in their recent basement remodel that has transformed this previously underutilized space into the sophisticated suite of any girl's dreams.
Once a barely-finished "bonus room", this basement area was truly a blank slate for our clients' daughter to make all the final design decisions for a new bedroom, bathroom and living area. For our part, the Creekstone Design team treated this project as a true extension of the home's living space so that the suite would feel connected with the rest of the house.
The Challenges
Designing for a basement always holds a set of unique challenges surrounding space, height, and structural requirements. To overcome these, our team focused on adding indirect and layered light, as well as three new windows; creating interest on the walls to draw the eye away from the ceiling height, and carefully placing walls to disguise beams and soffits wherever we could.
A Trendy Design
A far cry from her old bedroom's pinks, purples and bean bag chairs, this sophisticated pre-teen just might have earned her spot on the Creekstone design team with her bold decisions for this interior. Gray and white shiplap anchor the eye in the living area and serve as a backdrop for the TV nook and a feature wall surrounding the fireplace. A patterned, low-pile carpet creates continuity as it flows from one room to the next.
In the bedroom, a jaw-dropping black-and-white horse mural serves as a striking focal point. It also cleverly disguises an electrical panel and works to draw the eye away from the soffits on either side of the ceiling.
The floating desk area, strategically tucked on one side of a structural post, features hidden lighting and a magnetic chalkboard for creativity to flow. On the other side of the post, built-in shelves provide lots of extra storage.
Upping the Cool Factor
While the rest of the space might be cool, the new bathroom in this basement is the true showstopper. Made from an unused utility room, this bathroom is the height of everything fun and modern. Beginning with the same neutral color palette, we skim-coated the existing concrete floor for an industrial feel. We then added gray European frameless cabinets and modern hardware before brightening the space with a white tub and tiles, and lots of lighting.
We wanted to do something extra special in this space, so we created a wrap-around corner niche in the shower with recessed, waterproof and dimmable LED lighting. The pop of blue in the ultra-modern custom glass tile layout continues on the wall behind the vanity as it frames the mirror right up to the ceiling.
A Space to Grow
Our clients couldn't be happier with this basement transformation. With thoughtful—and exquisite—design choices, the space can grow with their daughter long through her teenage years.
